Josh Duhamel, left, and Katherine Heigl get a quick lesson in parenting in the romantic comedy “Life As We Know It.”

After Movies In Order: How To Watch Chronologically And By Release Date

It’s been a busy week in home video, with big releases from an offbeat indie comedy to two major horror films.

Sold with rated and unrated versions. Rated version rated R for some language and brief violent content

Although it was made for less than $20,000, writer-director Oren Bely’s “Paranormal Activity” grossed more than $100 million, making it one of the biggest Hollywood success stories of 2009. That original film follows Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherstone), a young couple haunted by what appears to be a ghost, and their story is related through “home video” footage that is said to have been found and then assembled.

A sequel could have turned into that mess, as clever presentation was a big part of the first film, but director Todd Williams and writers Michael R. Perry, Christopher B. Landon and Tom Pabst’s “Paranormal Activity 2” is a project that pays proper respect to the original while introducing its own quality of fear.

My Criterion Wishlist

Williams’ film follows the basic formula of “Paranormal,” with all the action delivered through “found footage.” However, the timeline has been significantly altered with events depicted occurring before and after the original film.

Although Katie and Micah are characters again, this time the focus is on Katie’s sister Christy (Sprague Graydon). She and her husband Daniel (Brian Boland) welcome a new baby boy into their home, which they share with Daniel’s older daughter Ali (Mali Ephraim).

Williams spends a good amount of time establishing that this is a healthy, well-adjusted family. Then, creepy things start happening, including a burglary of their house, where nothing was stolen. Conveniently, this apparent gap leads Daniel to believe that security cameras are installed, and most of the footage from the scene is from those cameras.

For a sequel, “Paranormal Activity 2” feels surprisingly fresh and well-executed. Its ties to the original should keep hard-core fans happy, but the movie itself is great. One downside is that Williams takes a long time to set up the action, but if he’s in the thick of things, it’s a thrilling ride.

The Family Plan’

“Paranormal Activity 2” is available on standard DVD and as part of a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Both releases include rated and unrated versions of the film as well as never-before-seen footage.

Only in Hollywood would someone decide that the story of two freewheeling thirtysomethings who are forced to care for their recently deceased friend’s infant child contains a cute romantic comedy. Think about it. A child’s parents die, and for one reason or another – there is no one to care for her except two previously unsettled people. It’s a barrel of laughs, isn’t it?

In “Life As We Know It,” the reluctant caretakers are Josh Duhamel, who plays Eric Messer, a womanizing broadcast expert, and Mr. Wright went to Katherine Heigl, who played the elusive diner Holly Berenson. . Because they are complete opposites, they repel each other, although they agree to go together to give their dead friend’s orphaned daughter a good home. And, since it’s a movie, one thing leads to another.

The fact that Duhamel and Heigl are surprisingly likable actors makes the thing more palatable than it already is, but the whole premise can’t escape being kind of creepy. There’s no escaping overused parenting tricks, like the horror of the first diaper change and the challenge of interacting with a newly mobile toddler.

May December Cast, Release Date, Trailer & Plot Of Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore Movie

Duhamel, Heigl and director Greg Berlanti make the most of this material, but one can’t help but wonder why they didn’t get better material to work with. They are a talented group and they deserve more. And so is their audience.

DVD and Blu-ray extras include parenting advice from the cast, bits about Heigl and Duhamel’s production for the film, and a collection of deleted scenes.

Viewers of Andy Figman’s “U Again” are led to believe that high school enemies are enemies for life. A shining example of this is Marnie (Kristen Bell), an attractive professional woman who is ruthlessly picked on as a teenager. Although she has a hard time trying, she overcomes her past to become surprisingly successful as an entrepreneur.

However, her old insecurities resurface when she learns that her brother (James Wolk) is about to marry her high school archrival Joanna (Odette Yustman). The voice of reason is Marnie’s mother, Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis), who wisely tells her daughter to let go of the past. Until Gail learns that Jonah’s aunt (Sicourney Weaver) is one of her own high school rivals. Suddenly, with two generational enemies eyeing each other, the film devolves into a long string of immature catfights where grown women try to embarrass each other.

Batman Movies In Order

It might have been funny if Figman had attempted comic satire, but the tone is literal, meaning viewers are expected to take the subject somewhat seriously. That’s hard to do, especially when “U Again” uses the final act to preach the virtue of forgiving and forgetting, without realizing that most viewers could have learned that lesson years before any of the characters in the film.

DVD and Blu-ray extras include a short film on Figman’s filmmaking process, a mock interview with members of the cast, and a collection of deleted scenes.

Writer-director Wes Craven has made some great horror films over the years, but “My Soul to Take” doesn’t live up to their standards. The film is diverse and populated with tough characters
