Creative Ways To Advertise Your Small Business

Creative Ways To Advertise Your Small Business – One of the things about marketing that makes it seem so complicated is that, aside from publishing, a lot goes on behind closed doors.

When I started writing and talking about how marketing is not the same as publishing, it hit a nerve! I don’t think I’ve had so many emails or people mentioning something I’ve written about since I announced in 2017 that I was pregnant with my son!

The big question that was raised was: What are practical, creative marketing ideas for small businesses that DON’T publish?!

Small Business Dreams To Reality

I could talk about this all day – which is why I created a program called Uncomplicated Marketing Academy, which teaches exactly this topic. Do you want to have an effective, measurable daily marketing habit? You must be on the waiting list.

If you’re not ready for it yet, but still want some effective strategies in your pocket, then you’re in luck! I’ve rounded up some of my favorite, tried-and-true strategies and asked some of my favorite business owners to share what’s working for them right now.

I’ve been intentionally linking a lot more than posting which suits my personality better! Some of them are…

I have found that when people see or hear me and have learned something useful from me, they start to trust me much faster. And we know that trust is what needs to be there before someone will spend a penny with us.

Teaching, networking and speaking can be incredibly complicated if you let them be. Or it could be as simple as a talk I gave to a Facebook group of friends this week. I didn’t create any slides or a lengthy script. I jotted down some talking points, went live, and made sure to include a link for my email list. And it went great!

All the ways we can market seem to have overshadowed the basics of why marketing is important: People can’t buy what they don’t know exists.

So instead of trying to “beat the algorithm” or create a million Canva graphics for your feed, always go back to the basics: know, like and trust. Make sure people know you exist, use your content to show them what you do and earn their trust. It really can be that uncomplicated if you let it.

“This might be a scam… but one of my favorite non-publishing marketing activities is finding guests. So yes, it’s in service of the publishing business (my podcast), but it’s really networking.

Marketing And Promotions For Small Business In Times Of Crisis

I love doing this for myself because it’s a great way to connect with people, to let them know I’m paying attention and to let them know I appreciate their story.

But what surprised me was how much I love the process with our podcasting clients YellowHouse.Media. A lot of our clients really focus on their shows as networking – so hosting is such an amazing way for them to connect with the right people (and for us to connect them!).”

Dates for coffee. I did a lot of networking through coffee meetings — in person and virtually. I love coffee and cafes and real conversation. I find this to be a super effective way to get referrals and other fans of my work.

Social Media Marketing For Businesses

Outside of writing, most of my marketing efforts come from building relationships. I find that our community prefers relationship marketing over more traditional methods, as do I. The best part about these endeavors is that they seem excellent and aligned with my own integrity.

Connecting with neighboring service providers to explore referral partnerships, commenting and engaging on other posts/articles, “showing up and helping” in my preferred communities, repurposing existing content, guesting on podcasts and presenting at summits/virtual conferences.

Free consultations are my most converting marketing activity. They convert better than advertising, better than sales funnels, better than lead magnets, better than anything I’ve tried – because they’re authentic, not automated.

Chatting with coffee is my favorite! Just jumping on a call with someone in a niche that serves the same audience can lead to a variety of referrals and collaborations.

And there are coffee meetings here. Additionally, inviting people to a podcast or to guest write an essay for a blog. I believe that highlighting the work and vision of other people makes us happy — personally and professionally.

I’ve found that inviting guests on my podcast that I really want to talk to for my own selfish reasons is helpful in relationship building/word of mouth.

And I introduce myself on podcasts – people have been coming to me for a year+ after hearing one or two of my interviews on other people’s podcasts 🙂

Also – a free workshop I’ve given over 15 times and turned into a webinar – which is a great introduction to my work, a great marketing engine for me – people who like my Outline Your Memoir workshop are usually great ready to sign up for my full course (The art of creating personal myths – transformational memoir writing.)

And the Winter Solstice Free 10 Day Offer I created 3 years ago – I’m just offering the same thing again once a year in December. It’s easy, feels generous, and people love it and sign up for it.

“I’ve found that participating in groups is a great way to build relationships. Besides Facebook groups join networking groups, women’s groups, specific niche groups…. By being present, interacting and providing value, you create positive relationships that help not only your business but theirs as well.”

I will add replying to newsletters when they resonate, you can relate or just want to thank or cheer the writer.

In terms of systematizing my interactions on social media, I created a Notion database where I can collect content that I want to comment on or share. You can find it here and be sure to duplicate it if you want:
