“This is crap as we know it…” – Rolling Stone “Funnier and darker than you might expect, though the tone varies wildly enough to be really bothers him.” – Empire Magazine “It’s fast, active, painless. That’s high praise.” – Boston Globe “It doesn’t stray too far from the well-worn Hollywood rom-com path.” – New York Daily News “A very realistic, if completely formulaic, yarn about commitment and unexpected life changes.” – The Age “It’s a date night revolution. ” – Variety “Suffice it to say that the romantic comedy Life as We Know It, in which there is not one deviation from the formula, is well made for its physical type.” – The New York Times “So anyway, what happens in Life As We Know It? You’ll never guess in a million years. Never.” – Roger Ebert “Perhaps because Heigl is one of the producers, the most beautiful woman in the film – the stunning Christina Hendricks from ‘Mad Men’ – dies in an off-screen car accident just before the opening credits over.” – New York Post “You might not expect how satisfying much of the film is, with Duhamel turning out to be an excellent sparring partner for Heigl.” – Los Angeles Times “Though it’s utterly predictable in every beat and features insecure WASPs as romantic leads, ‘Life’ is not without its charms.” – Reporter Hollywood

Although produced for less than $20,000, writer-director Oren Peli’s “Paranormal Activity” brought in more than $100 million, making it one of Hollywood’s biggest success stories of 2009. That original film focuses on Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherstone), a young couple haunted by what appears to be a demon, and their story is linked through a “video home” which is said to have been found and collected later.

Since clever exposition was such a big part of the first film, a sequel could have turned into the mess it was made of, but director Tod Williams and writers Michael R. Perry, Christopher B. Landon turned and Tom Pabst “Paranormal Activity 2” into a project that pays proper homage to the original while at the same time introducing quality scares of its own.

Making Good Friends

Williams’ film follows the basic formula of “Paranormal” One, with all the action presented through “found footage.” The timeline has changed significantly, however, with the events depicted taking place both before and after those in the original film.

Although Katie and Micah are characters again, the focus this time is on Katie’s sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden). She and her husband, Daniel (Brian Boland), have just welcomed a new boy into their home, which they share with Daniel’s oldest daughter, Ali (Molly Ephraim).

Williams spends a lot of time proving that this is a healthy, well-adjusted family. Then, scary things start happening, including money being stolen from their house where nothing is stolen. Fittingly, this apparent breach convinces Daniel to install security cameras, and much of the footage from that point on comes from those cameras.

For a sequel, “Paranormal Activity 2” feels surprisingly fresh and well-executed. Its connection to the original film should keep die-hard fans happy, but the film holds up well on its own. The only flaw is that Williams takes a long time to set up the action, but once he’s in the thick of things, it’s an interesting ride.

“Paranormal Activity 2” is available on standard DVD and as part of a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Both releases include rated and unrated versions of the film and never-before-seen footage.

Only in Hollywood would someone decide that the story of a thirty-something freewheeling two-wheeler who has to care for their friends’ recently deceased infant child contains a cute romantic comedy. Think about it. A baby’s parents die, and there is no one to care for her except two people who – for some reason – did not settle before. It’s a barrel of laughs, isn’t it?

In “Life As We Know It” the roles of lazy caregivers go to Josh Duhamel, who plays a female broadcast professional named Eric Messer, and Katherine Heigl, who plays Holly Berenson, a restaurateur who didn’t find Mr. Right. . Being complete opposites, they reject each other, but nevertheless agree to move in together to give their dead friends’ orphaned daughter a good home. And, this being a movie, one thing leads to another.

The fact that Duhamel and Heigl are amazingly likable actors makes the stuff more palatable than it might be, but the whole premise is undeniably a bit creepy. There’s no escaping the overused parenting gags, such as the horror of the first diaper change and the challenge of keeping up with a newborn baby.

Duhamel, Heigl and director Greg Berlanti make the best of the material, but one can’t help but wonder why they aren’t given better material to work with. They are a talented bunch, and they deserve more. So do their audiences.

Viewers of Andy Fickman’s “You Again” are supposed to believe that high school enemies are enemies for life. The perfect example of this is Marni (Kristen Bell), an attractive professional woman who is mercilessly picked on as a teenager. Although she tries hard, she overcomes her past to become a successful businesswoman.

However, her old insecurities surface when she finds out that her brother (James Wolk) is about to marry his high school arch nemesis, Joanna (Odette Yustman). The voice of reason is Marni’s mother, Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis), who wisely tells her daughter to let bygones be bygones. That is until Gail learns that Aunt Joanna (Sigourney Weaver) is one of her own high school rivals. Suddenly, with two generations of nemeses looking down on each other, the film introduces a long sequence of immature cat fights, where the grown women, apparently, try to make one and to embarrass each other.

Everything To Know About The Barbie Movie Cast

This might have been funny if Fickman had tried to make a funny farce, but the tone is simple, meaning viewers are supposed to take this stuff a little seriously. That’s hard to do, especially when “You Again” uses its final act to preach the merits of forgiving and forgetting, not realizing that most people might have learned of the audience that lesson years before any character in the film.

DVD and Blu-ray extras include a summary of Fickman’s filmmaking process, a spoof interview with cast members and a collection of deleted scenes.

Writer-director Wes Craven has made some great horror movies over the years, but “My Soul to Take” doesn’t measure up to their standard. The film is disjointed and full of bland characters who are hard to like. Even worse, it’s not that scary.

The film begins effectively, introducing viewers to the Riverton Ripper, a schizophrenic serial killer who murders his wife and nearly kills his daughter before the police catch him. Then, before the Ripper is sent to prison, he leaves.

Fast forward 16 years and Riverton is still haunted by memories of the killer. There are whispers that seven children born on the night he disappeared are somehow connected to his legacy, and when several of them end up dead it seems there is something to those rumors.

Craven’s story takes a few twists and turns, but it also leaves major plot points largely underdeveloped. That makes it hard to invest in—and sometimes understand—what’s going on. A listless third act that is too similar to several other horror movies, makes matters worse. Where Craven’s films are concerned, “My Soul
