As CEO of LoginRadius, I’m always looking to sharpen my negotiation skills. A few months ago, one of my employees in the sales team suggested I read this book. I really liked the story behind the negotiation techniques and ordered the book.

Co-authored by Chris Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator and the FBI’s lead international kidnapping negotiator. The book is not academic. Instead, it is based on Chris’s career, FBI interactions, research and training, and his real-life experiences (perfect for me because I always prefer books based on life experience over academic books).
Book Review: Never Split The Difference
The book covers a wide range of stories from extreme negotiation situations in Colombia to someone trying to negotiate the rent of their home with a landlord. Chris focuses on covering as many real life stories as possible to explain his negotiation techniques and he has done a great job in simplifying it.
We may not (God forbid) face extreme situations like being held hostage, but the fundamental concepts of negotiation apply in work and daily life. I learned a lot from this book and made lots of notes for myself. I’m sure I’ll go back for reference whenever I’m stuck in a difficult conversation situation π
This is a 249 page book that was originally published in 2016 and I don’t think there is another edition. The book is divided into 10 chapters and the storytelling style makes it an engaging read. The author also includes an appendix called “Prepare a Negotiation Paper” that summarizes various negotiation tools and provides a framework for negotiating preparation.
It is widely available at online bookstores such as Amazon and Indigo, and is priced at US$13.55 for paperback and US$19.59 for hardcover.

However, if you are into politics, entrepreneurship, or any other profile that requires leadership skills, then this book is especially for you.
